Fundal height is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. Inter-rater variability between providers is real — different hands measure differently. McDonald's rule of thumb (cm ≈ weeks of gestation) is decent in the second trimester and starts diverging after week 36 as the baby drops.
Outside the 10th–90th percentile, providers usually order a growth ultrasound — that's the better data. A fundal height that's slightly off doesn't mean anything is wrong; it means more information is helpful.
